Just three little words can change your world. If you don’t believe me, just try saying them. “I. Love.You.”

Fakin' the funk. Does that phrase ring a bell? If not, I will enlighten you. It’s a slang term used for acting as if you care about something when you don’t. It is a term to describe laziness and a willingness to beat the system.

It has been said, “There are no atheists in a fox hole.”There were none the day of the crash on the highway near my house either.

It’s that time again: turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, PIE; sitting around the table with family, friends, and food.

What are your Simple Pleasures? I’ve just started reading a book by a woman with an incredible talent for waking up the inner desires of the mind and heart! This writer always makes me feel so talented, not because I can do anything special, but because I love to dream.

Remember Robert? I wrote about Robert in an article entitled, “What will be in your box?” Robert was a homeless man who came to Winfield House to heal. During his stay, we had tremendous success and some failures as well. Robert was an alcoholic and drug abuser who had lived a life of self-abuse stemming from unresolved grief. Robert went from shelter to shelter looking for help, but wound up living under a bridge in Cincinnati for most of his adult life.

Try off-roading a little – gun it on the rutted road. Try letting someone else drive; in fact, trust God to do the driving. Try crossing the bridge, riding the ferry or especially changing the drab, pointless rut we sometimes carve so deeply into our lives. Face your fear with faith and hope because...the view is spectacular on the other side.

I needed to know what brought this man to the place where he had spent eleven and a half years incarcerated in a state facility. What in his childhood had allowed such a circumstance to present itself and bring him to such a low and criminal place?

God’s creation is amazing. I just looked out my front door. I noticed what looked like a strategic gang set up. A herd of deer were surrounding the front of my house. They were spread out, one in each of the corners of the bushes, as if they were staking out the place. It appeared that they were ready to come in for a counter-attack from Saturday’s kill.

I had an experience recently where I was invited to a dinner. It was a beautiful night, still sunny outside, warm, and thank God, Friday. Funny thing, I thought I was going out for a nice evening to relax. No! I discovered that I was in the middle of an ambush.

It was 1968 and I walked into Tiger Stadium with awe! I was only 10-years old, and I was star struck with the enormity of a stadium. I had hope and I had faith in my Detroit Tigers.

Chris was an average student who excelled as a pitcher on the baseball team. Chris’ future was bright, as he planned for college and a possible baseball career. He was raised in a Christian home, where God and morals were taught. It appeared that nothing could fail for this young man. Far from his mind was the life he had not planned for, a life where striking out is real, and running the bases of the legal system did not give you points, but took away years of your life.

During a warm afternoon at Winfield House, I was readying myself for the kids’ after-school program. I heard a knock on the back door. One of the volunteers answered and called to me with a very anxious tone in her voice. “Karyn, there is someone who needs to talk to you.” Curious, I left what I was doing and walked to the back door. There stood a man. He was perhaps the dirtiest man I had ever seen. . .

I am originally from the Detroit area, so meeting a gang leader didn’t seem terribly unique. It was the type of gang this guy represented that was different. The leader’s name was Shiloh.

So much for global warming! Well, I hope you are all making it through the snow storms in one piece.

This winter has been so beautiful where I live.

I live on a farm, in a barn-house with twenty-three, six by three foot windows surrounding the perimeter of the home. Basically what it looks like from my perspective is that I am living in a snow globe. I wake up each morning to a fresh shake from the heavens.

On this forthcoming Valentine’s Day week, we are all reminded to think of love. We think of people we love, things we love, and what the word love means to us. We buy jewelry, wear red clothing, and eat chocolates from red heart-shaped boxes.

What is the meaning? Why do Americans express love on this day, Valentine’s Day?
